1. In 1649, To St George's Hill,
A ragged band they called the Diggers
Came to show the people's will
They defied the landlords, They defied the law
They were the dispossessed, Reclaiming what was theirs

2. 'We come in peace' they said, 'To dig and sow
We come to work the land in common
And to make the waste land grow
This earth divided, We will make whole
So it can be, A common treasury for all

3 . We work, we eat together, We need no swords
We will not bow to masters, Or pay rent to the lords
We are free men, Though we are poor
You Diggers all stand up for glory, Stand up now

4 . The sin of property, We do disdain
No one has any right to buy and sell
The earth for private gain,
By theft and murder, They took the land
Now everywhere the walls, Rise up at their command

5 . They make the laws, To chain us well
The clergy dazzle us with heaven
Or they damn us into hell,
We will not worship, The God they serve
The God of greed who feeds the rich, While poor men starve

6. From the men of property, The orders came
They sent the hired men and troopers
To wipe out the Diggers' claim
Tear down their cottages, Destroy their corn
They were dispersed, But still the vision lingers on

7. You poor take courage, You rich take care
This earth was made a common treasury
For everyone to share
All things in common, All people one
We come in peace - The order came to cut them down

Note: the order of the verses in the first recording of the song by Leon Rosselson was for verse 3 above to be moved down to verse 5 i.e.after 'They make the laws....'

1. En sieze cents quarantante neuf aux champs de St Georges
Une bande, les Diggers est venue
montrer la volonté du peuple;
Le propriétaire, ils’en fout pas mal
Les lois aussi, ils reclamaient ce qui leur appartient.

2. Nous voila en paix pour labourer
et semer ensemble cette terre
et ensemble tous travailler
Ce monde diviser on va ce rendre entier
Pour faire un tresor commun et partager

3. Ensemble on mange ensemble on travaille
On a pas d’ armes, et on ne salut pas les grands seigneurs de paille
Tous, On est libre, meme sans un sous
Debout les Diggers pour la gloire, allez, debout

4 . La propriété et un péché
Vendre la terre pour profit
n’est pas un droit ni de l’acheter
Par vol et meurtre ils ont prit la terre
Et maintenant ils font partout pousser les barrières

5. Ils font les lois pour nous enchainer
Ils nous menace avec l’enfer
Ou nous eblouisse avec le paradis
leur Dieu avare n’est pas divin
Il nourri les riches pendant que les pauvres meurent de faim

6. Les proprietaires donnent leurs commandes
Les biens des Diggers sont detruit
par leurs mercenaires en bande
Maison brûlé, champs de blé détruit
Les Diggers dispersé, mais leurs idees survivent

7. Les pauvres, courage, les riches prennent soins
Cet tresor communal la terre
nous tous appartient
Toute choses en commun, tout peuple uni
Venu en paix, les ordres arrivent: il faut les détruire.
